Intro

Concepción is a city in south-central Chile (509,04 Km south of Santiago, the nation´s capital) who lies near the mouth of the Bío-Bío River. It was founded in 1550 on the site of what is now Penco, and in 1754 it was moved inland to its present site, 10 Km from the river mouth and 13 m above sea level. Concepción has become a major commercial and industrial centre due to particular site advantages: Concepción Bay, to the north, is large and protected, and the Bío-Bío River provides a corridor through the coastal mountains to the Central Valley region where agricultural and forest industries are well developed. Concepción is the capital of Concepción Province and of the Bío-Bío Region (Region VIII). The Greater Concepción (Gran Concepción, including Talcahuano, San Pedro de la Paz, Hualpén, Chiguayante, Penco, Tomé, Lota, Coronel, Hualqui and Concepción) is the second-largest conurbation in the country, with 889,725 inhabitants (2002 census). Individually, it is the 11th largest commune in the country, with a population of 212,003.

The University of Concepcion was founded in 1919, becoming the first regional university in Chile. The University's founder, Enrique Molina G., was also its first President proposed that "this new University, in addition to professional education in liberal arts and technical sciences, as required by the development and increased national wealth, will be center of information for the public, outreach, scientific research and experimentation, and the promotion of best literary, humanist and philosophical culture".

The University holds 18 faculties distributed in 3 campuses: Concepción (central campus), Chillán and Los Ángeles. Campus Concepción is the central campus of the University of Concepción. Is well known like the "Universitary District", because all the academic activities are concentrated on only one place.
