THE IMPORTANCE OF APPLYING ARTIFICIAL PHOTOPERIOD

(......) Until before Fisheries Under Secretariat Resolution # 1531, witch became operative on July 18, 2000, the Chilean salmon farming industry imported eggs from the northern hemisphere during the months in witch Chilean spawners are not fertile (November - January), but importing eggs from the northern producers to Chile implied a hazard due to the risk of introducing new pathologies, being the latter the principal reason why the resolution tacitly forbids imports.
The before mentioned has brought serious difficulties to the industry since a maximum use of hatcheries, smolting and growing centers is impossible to achieve along the year (the installed capacity for smolting and growing-out can only be used efficiently when a progressive production program for alevins exists along the year).
This way, implementing Artificial Photoperiod Technology allows secure and opportune access (production) to out of season salmon eggs, a strict necessity and one of the salmon farming industries most important resources.
