The Universidad de Concepción is a private corporation founded in 1919 as the result of an initiative from the local community. It was the third university established in the country and the first one located outside Santiago, the capital city. It is one of the eighth traditional universitites existing in the country prior to 1980. The Universidad de Concepción receives partial funding from the government and is a member of the Council of Rectors which is integrated by the Chilean universities that obtain public funding.

Universidad de Concepción The Rector of the University presides over the Board of Directors and the Academic Council which is formed by the Vice-rector, the Deans of the Faculties and the students representatives, whose role is to fomulate and evaluate the policies of the University.
The Rector is elected every four years by the Academic Body and the members of the Board of Directors. This Board is elected by 300 members of the Academic Body of the University and 300 members of the community of Concepción and their main aim is to administer the endowment of the University.
